WHAT WE DO
At Cognition Ignition we use one on one Instrumental Enrichment therapy to treat a variety of mental conditions, including but not limited to:
- Brain Injuries
- Autism
- ADD
- ADHD
- Down Syndrome
- Dyslexia
- Mental Retardation
- Learning Disabilities
Our Instrumental Enrichment program effectively improves thinking and learning skills in children and adults with cognitive disabilities caused by a a variety of conditions, including stroke, brain injury, ADHD and aging. In the brain-injured and the elderly, IE slows down deterioration and may even reverse cognitive damage.
What is Instrumental Enrichment?
Instrumental Enrichment is a cognitive therapy program that has been used successfully in over seventy countries over the past 60 years. The fundamental assumption of the program is that intelligence is dynamic and modifiable, not static or fixed. Thus the program is designed to:
- Correct deficiencies in fundamental thinking skills
- Create a longer attention span
- Provide improved concentration
- Restructure cognitive pathways
What is the Basic Theory Behind It?
The theory of structural cognitive modifiability views the human organism as open, adaptive and amenable for change. The aim of this approach is to modify the individual, emphasizing autonomous and self-regulated change. Intelligence is viewed as a propensity of people to modify themselves when confronted with the need to do so. It involves the capacity of the individual to be modified by learning and the ability to use whatever modification has occurred for future adjustments. Intelligence is defined as a changeable state rather than an immutable trait.
Cognition thus plays a central role in human modifiability, which can moderate the influence of such factors and genetic predisposition, organic impairment or educational deprivation.
How Does it Work?
Our instruments project to the mind the type of language that it needs to correct itself. These operations cause cognitive restructuring and enable the individual to function better. In time the mind-set of the person changes to CAN rather then CAN'T and helps to create a successful and happy individual. Ultimately this new found independence enables the person to achieve their potential and live their dreams.
How long does it take before I start seeing results?
The duration of the therapy will depend on the deficits and issues that the person being treated brings to the table. The deeper the deficits and dependencies, the longer the intervention will last. Part of the healing has to do with developing a better attention span and longer concentration. The duration of the treatments will be determined after a personal consultation.
This method has been widely used in Israel (where it was developed), Europe and worldwide for the past 60 years. It has only recently been introduced in the United States.
